Hugo Chavez earned his wealth as the president of Venezuela. He was born to a poor family in the town of Sabaneta. He graduated from Venezuela’s Academy of Military Science in 1975. He joined the army and eventually reached the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. In 1992, he attempted to overthrow the government of Carlos Andrés Peréz’; he failed and was imprisoned for two years. In 1998 he was elected president of Venezuela, winning 56% of the vote in the election.
He has proven to be a tough leader. His administration survived the failed 2002 coup against him and a recall vote in 2004. Venezuela has large oil reserves , and he has used much of the profits to benefit the poor people of his country. In October 2012, Chávez was re-elected as presidential election for a third time, defeating Henrique Capriles.
