Johnny Depp’s first major role was in the Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), a classic horror film. Afterwards, Depp started studying acting. The lessons paid off when he landed a lead role on the Fox television show, 21 Jump Street, which premiered in 1987. The role catapulted Depp into stardom.
In 1990, Depp starred in Tim Burton’s fantasy film, Edward Scissorhands, which grossed more than $54 million at the box office. Depp has worked with Burton in several other movies including, Ed Wood (1994), Sleepy Hollow (1999), opposite Christina Ricci, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007), which earned him a Golden Globe Award, Alice in Wonderland (2010), and Dark Shadows (2012) alongside Helena Bonham Carter.
In 2003, Depp starred the Walt Disney film Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, which was hugely successful. The film grossed over $650 million at the box office worldwide, and led to the creation of a Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
