Matt Lauer became rich as a television journalist. He began his television career in 1979 as an intern for WOWK-TV in West Virginia. In the 1980s he moved around the United States to further his career, working at news magazines and talk programs in New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Richmond, and Providence. He hosted a couple of shows including Fortune & Romance with Robin Leach, Fame, Lifetime’s Esquire Show, 9 Broadway Plaza, and talk show Day’s End.

In 1992, he signed with NBC to host two shows, Today in New York and Live at Five. Soon, he became a frequent host for the NBC’s specials, including The Tournament of Roses Parade, Today at Night and Up for the Golden Globes.

In 1994, Lauer became news anchor for the morning show Today,  and in 1997 succeeded Bryant Gumbel as co-host.
