Ryan Lochte began swimming when he was five years old. He first qualified for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. That year, he swam with Klete Keller, Michael Phelps and Peter Vanderkaay to win the gold medal in the 4-by-200–meter freestyle relay. He also captured the silver medal in the 200-meter individual medley and the bronze in the 200-meter freestyle.
