Viggo Mortensen graduated from St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York in 1980. Afterward, he went to Europe and worked many odd jobs including selling flowers and driving a truck. He later returned to the United States to pursue an acting career.
Mortensen made his film debut playing an Amish farmer in Peter Weir’s Witness (1985). His further work includes Crimson Tide (1995) with Gene Hackman, G.I. Jane (1997) with Demi Moore, and 28 Days (2000).
Mortensen gained greater fame for his role as Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and later films include Hidalgo (2004), A History of Violence (2005) directed by David Cronenberg, and The Road (2009)
