At WWWW, a commercial FM radio station, Howard Stern began his radio career in 1979 as a morning show host for Radio & Records. In the beginning, his efforts paid off, as he was awarded the Billboard Personality of the Year award.

A new program was in the works for Stern when he relocated to a radio station in Washington DC, WWDC. WWDC gave stern a one-year deal, but he eventually opted to go with WNBC in 1982.
